When Enough is Good Enough

I'm away visiting family after coming up for air from a pretty intense work winter. Everything I did over the last several weeks was exciting and meaningful, but at times I was stretched to keep up with the full spectrum of my life. My sleep suffered. I didn't eat as well. I certainly wasn't exercising like I usually do. Now I'm looking forward to getting back in the saddle of my physical wellness, but the whole experience got me thinking, especially because I hear the same kind of pattern emerging a lot when I'm working with wellness coaching clients.

There is a time and a season for all sorts of experiences, and some of them can be overwhelming even while they are fulfilling. The overwhelm isn't necessarily a bad thing, assuming it's not forever. Achievement is just as important of a need as anything else, and it's ok to work hard for it at times, even if some of your good health habits fall to the side while you're doing that.

When you are working hard, though, you may need to show up for yourself in new ways, like letting someone else take care of you or cook for you (that includes ordering out for dinner). You might need to meditate more than jog, or spend your limited free time with loved ones instead of prepping every meal.

High achievement times of your life may require a slightly different wellness recipe than you typically try to cook up for yourself. Notice how your needs differ in these moments and show up in the ways that matter right then. It might not be the regimen you are used to, but for this moment it is enough, and that's good enough. Just keep showing up for yourself in the ways you need, and be ready to spring back into your old habits once you come up for air.

Keep achieving and be well until next time!
